Social media marketing is an addition to personal, small business, corporate, and non-profit organizations’ integrated marketing communications plans. Andreas Kaplan and Michael Haenlein define social media as "a group of Internet-based applications that build on the ideological and technological foundations of Web 2.0, and that allow the creation and exchange of user-generated content." Integrated marketing communications is a multifaceted, orchestrated marketing and advertising practice organizations follow to connect with their target markets. Integrated marketing communications coordinates promotional elements: advertising, personal selling, public relations, publicity, direct marketing and sales promotion. Increasingly, viral marketing campaigns are also grouped into integrated marketing communications. In the traditional marketing communications model, the content, frequency, timing, and medium of communications by the organization is in collaboration with an external agent, i.e. advertising agencies, marketing research firms and public relations firms. However, the growth of social media has impacted the way organizations communicate. With the emergence of Web 2.0, the internet provides a set of tools that allow people to build social and business connections, share information and collaborate on projects online.

Social media marketing programs usually center on efforts to create content that attracts attention and encourages readers to share it with their social networks. A corporate message spreads from user to user and presumably resonates because it appears to come from a trusted, third-party source, as opposed to the brand or company itself. Hence, this form of marketing is driven by word-of-mouth, meaning it results in earned media rather than paid media.
Social media has become a platform that is easily accessible to anyone with internet access. Increased communication for organizations fosters brand awareness and often, improved customer service. Additionally, social media serves as a relatively inexpensive platform for organizations to implement marketing campaigns. With emergence of channels like Twitter, the barrier to entry in social media is greatly reduced.

Social media is a phrase being tossed around a lot these days, but it can sometimes be difficult to answer the question of what is social media. If MySpace is a social media site, and Mag.nolia is a social media site, and Wikipedia is a social media site, then just what is social media?

Is it social networking?

Is it wiki?


What is Social Media?

The best way to define social media is to break it down. Media is an instrument on communication, like a newspaper or a radio, so social media would be a social instrument of communication.

In Web 2.0 terms, this would be a website that doesn't just give you information, but interacts with you while giving you that information. This interaction can be as simple as asking for your comments or letting you vote on an article, or it can be as complex as Flixster recommending movies to you based on the ratings of other people with similar interests.

Think of regular media as a one-way street where you can read a newspaper or listen to a report on television, but you have very limited ability to give your thoughts on the matter.

Social media, on the other hand, is a two-way street that gives you the ability to communicate too.

Is Social Media and Social News The Same Thing?

It is easy to confuse social media with social news because we often refer to members of the news as "the media." Adding to the confusion is the fact that a social news site is also a social media site because it falls into that broader category.

But social news is not the same thing as social media anymore than a banana is the same thing as fruit. A banana is a type of fruit, but fruit can also be grapes, strawberries, or lemons. And while social news is social media, social networking and wikis are also social media.

What Are Some Social Media Websites?

Now that we have answered the question of what is social media, we can move on to social media websites. Because social media is such a broad term, it covers a large range of websites. But the one common link between these websites is that you are able to interact with the website and interact with other visitors.

Here are some examples of social media websites:

  • Social Bookmarking. (Del.icio.us, Blinklist, Simpy) Interact by tagging websites and searching through websites bookmarked by other people.
  • Social News. (Digg, Propeller, Reddit) Interact by voting for articles and commenting on them.
  • Social Networking. (Facebook, Hi5, Last.FM) Interact by adding friends, commenting on profiles, joining groups and having discussions.
  • Social Photo and Video Sharing. (YouTube, Flickr) Interact by sharing photos or videos and commenting on user submissions.
  • Wikis. (Wikipedia, Wikia) Interact by adding articles and editing existing articles.

And these websites are not the only social media websites. Any website that invites you to interact with the site and with other visitors falls into the definition of social media.

Google coba Peruntungan di Jejaring Sosial



Siapa yang tidak kenal Google, dari yang baru kenal internet sampai yang sudah mahir pasti tahu. Google atau yang lebih dikenal dengan julukan "mbah google" merupakan raja search engine online terbesar di dunia maya bahkan di dunia yang tidak maya. Selain itu google dikenal dengan beragam produknya yang prestisius mulai dari layanan g-mail, pembelian youtube, sampai google adsense yang di buru oleh para pemburu pemburu uang. Namun karya google di social media (scomed) tidak begitu mengesankan sebut saja g-talk yang tidak bisa bersaing dengan YM Mesengger dan Skype, apalagi google buz yang banyak menganggapnya sangat merugikan. Tapi bukan google kalau patah semangat, tanggal 28 Juni 2011 kemarin google secara resmi meluncurkan Situs jejaring media yang di namai Google Plus yang di harapkan mampu bersaing dengan sang fenomenal Facebook dan sang maestro Twitter.

Google Plus harus benar-benar membuktikan kemampuannya, lawannya pertama tentu tidak mudah, facebook sebagai situs jejaring sosial yang mampu menggapai jutaan pengguna di seluruh dunia dalam waktu yang singkat akan memberikan perlawanan yang berat. Selaian itu Twitter yang telah mengorbitkan penggunanya keberagam posisi penting di kehidupan akan sangat susah digeser.

Terlepas dari semua itu goole plus mempunyai keunikan tersendiri, dengan adanya fasilitas Google+ Circle yang berfungsi untuk membuat sebuah grup, dan mampu memisah teman secara berkelompok mungkin dapat mengurangi banyaknya kloning ID di situs jejaring sosial lain karena pengguna susah memisah pretemanannya. Namun saat ini Google Plus sedang dalam tahap percobaan, hanya sejumlah pengguna saja yang dapat mengaksesnya salah satunya Mark Zuckerberg pendiri Facebook bahkan dia Menurut catatan Google+ Statistics yang dirilis pada Selasa (5/7/2011) memiliki Followers terbanyak 21.213 follower, mengalahkan Founder Google Larry Page 14.798 follower, dan Co-Founder Google Sergey Brin 11.629 follower.
